There is a key word  for everything related to salvation.
This Keyword is "Atonement" you have another word "expiation" but atonement is the best word ever chosen because it fits in every context. The root of this word is "at one he meant" that means to make at one or to be at one.
This is true not only for the sacrifice of Jesus that atoning put the people again at one with God. Everything in the Gospel has the purpose to put every people at one. Let me explain.
We baptize people to make them at one in the church, for this purpose we are doing missionary work.
we perfect the saints just to make them at one in the church, the purpose of the church is unity.
we perform genealogy and baptism for the dead to put this people at one with us. Now we know that what was the first will be the last at the end. I said this because there is relationship for me also with the word of wisdom.
To have the right answers you need to ask the correct questions, in this case;
Why the word of wisdom?
What is its purpose?
We know that we came here for two purposes, to gain knowledge and to obtain a body. Both of these goals were just to make people like God
The word of wisdom was given from the very beginning. Many people consider this law a lower law, but this is no the case.
Usually people are thinking that the "word of wisdom" is just an earthly law, but God never meant to give a law without a spiritual meaning, in fact
D&C 29:34
34 Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal; neither any man, nor the children of men; neither Adam, your father, whom I created.

D&C 29:35
35 Behold, I gave unto him that he should be an agent unto himself; and I gave unto him commandment, but no temporal commandment gave I unto him, for my commandments are spiritual; they are not natural nor temporal, neither carnal nor sensual.
So we need to discover the spiritual meaning of the word of wisdom.
Surely the temporal meaning of the word of wisdom is to live a longer life and have a good care of what God gave us, but according to the scripture just quoted there is a spiritual importance behind her, more important than we usually think.
D&C 88:14
14 Now, verily I say unto you, that through the redemption which is made for you is brought to pass the resurrection from the dead.

D&C 88:15
15 And the spirit and the body are the soul of man.

D&C 88:16
16 And the resurrection from the dead is the redemption of the soul.

D&C 88:17
17 And the redemption of the soul is through him that quickeneth all things, in whose bosom it is decreed that the poor and the meek of the earth shall inherit it.

D&C 88:18
18 Therefore, it must needs be sanctified from all unrighteousness, that it may be prepared for the celestial glory;
None impure thing will be able to abide the celestial glory
It is true that one of the main reason for the word of wisdom was
D&C 89:2
2  showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days--
But still its promises are spiritual
D&C 89:18
18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

D&C 89:19
19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

D&C 89:20
20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

D&C 89:21
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
It is interesting to note that in all the ages when somebody should approach God should purify and sanctify, also the Holy Ghost has the power to purify our spirit, we know that everything will be purified and sanctify by the holy Ghost at the end.

Exodus 19:22
22 And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.

Exodus 19:23
23 And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

Exodus 29:44
44 And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest's office.

Exodus 29:45
45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.

1 Thessalonians 5:23
23 ¶ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
D&C 84:23
23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;

Through the ages God gave several words of wisdom, the more famous was that one included in the Law of Moses and it was intended to be a schoolteacher for an higher law, but let's go in the very beginning.
The real word of wisdom was given in the command "do not partake of the fruit of the Knowledge of good and evil" in fact this fruit would have brought "death"
Anyway it is interesting that this was anyway the first step to put man in a way at-one with God
Genesis 3:22
22 ¶ And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
At this point I'd like to point out on what is the purpose of the word of wisdom in the plan of God.
In the scripture, the star is a symbol for man.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were promised that their posterity would be as the "stars of heaven"
Genesis 15:5  22:17   26:4  exodus 32:13  Deuteronomy 28:62 1 Chronicles 27:23. Joseph's brothers were the eleven stars who bowed to him Genesis 39:9,10. Daniel saw the little horn oppress the stars, the Lord's people Daniel 8:10. Christ is the Star out of Jacob Numbers 24:17 and the bright and morning star Revelation 2:28  22:16 2 Peter 1:19.
Why the star is a symbol for man?
1 Corinthians 15:41
41 [There is] one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for [one] star differeth from [another] star in glory.
The star is a symbol for man in this telestial earth, star represents man in this sphere

Don't forget that the morning stars were the spirit in the morning, like Lucifer was a morning star, but he never became a star for the night, remember that stars in the morning are not visible, morning stars are just spirits.
One of the main purposes for this life is to obtain a body, Lucifer and his hosts lost this opportunity, but why our body is so important and why the word of wisdom is so strictly related to it. In the law of Moses God pointed out that there are things clean and unclean and we know that nothing unclean can inherit the kingdom of God. Paul explained this point

1 Corinthians 15:40
40 [There are] also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial [is] one, and the [glory] of the terrestrial [is] another.

1 Corinthians 15:41
41 [There is] one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for [one] star differeth from [another] star in glory.

1 Corinthians 15:42
42 So also [is] the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
1 Corinthians 15:43
43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

1 Corinthians 15:44
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:45
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:46
46 Howbeit that [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

D&C 84:33
D&C 88:15 so we need to keep them clean both

let's see what the scriptures declare about our body
John 2:19
19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

John 2:20
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

John 2:21
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
Jesus clearly kept his body like a temple and compared it to a temple because..
1 Corinthians 3:16
16 ¶ Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

1 Corinthians 3:17
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.
1 Corinthians 6:19
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:20
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
Our body is in the likeness and resemblance of God and the temple of the Holy Ghost.
So we have at least two important reasons to keep our body holy, but there is more.
we said at the beginning that one word of wisdom was the first step to make man at one with God and we know that what was first will be last at the end.
Fortunately here we are people went throught the temple so if I say that mankind fallen because didn't keep the first word of wisdom, the last Adam will go trough the veil only if he will recognize the benefits of the last word of wisdom that allow the body to be cleansed and purified to gain and to bear the celestial kingdom
And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
Here the word of wisdom is in junction to the obedience of the other commandments and if you remember the last keyword given to mankind to go trough the veil you will recognize its importance.
D&C 88:28-29
And your glory shall be that glory by which your bodies are quickened
Ye wha are quickened by a portion of the celestial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fullness.
Ending we can easily support the idea that the word of wisdom it helps not only the body to live a longer life but more then that is helping our body to be a temple of the Holy Ghost and preparing it to be Quickened by the spirit in the resurrection and to be able to bear the celestial kingdom

Justice may prevent us from being in a higher kingdom of glory; but mercy also intervenes to save us from a higher degree of glory. We are only deprived of that which we are incapable of enjoying,  and we are only incapable of enjoying that which we have chosen not to prepare for.
