(By Paul Osborne)

This chronology is compiled from information contained from the scriptures. The time frame from Adam to modern days is reconstructed using historical references directly from the scriptures.  The dates within the time line that are noted with an asterisk are the fixed references that make it possible to determine the actual length of earth history.  The other dates indicate events that occurred in the time line as they relate to the fixed times.

2294* The Flood  (The Book of Moses confirms the chronology contained in the  Genesis account from Adam to the death of Methuselah.  The Bible affirms that Noah was 600 years old during the flood which is the same year that Methuselah died.)

THE SECOND PERIOD

THE PATRIARCHAL REIGN FROM THE FLOOD

TO JACOB IN EGYPT

582 YEARS

2294*  The Flood; Noah age 600  (Gen 7:6,11) Japheth age 150, Shem age 108, Ham age 100  (Moses 8:12)

2293 The flood water subside

2292*  Shem begat Arphaxad 2 years after the flood. In Gen 11:10 it states that Shem was 100 years old when he begat Arphaxad 2 years after the flood. Therefore,  according to the Bible, Shem was 98 when the flood began.  However, we learn in Moses (8:12) the correct birth order of Noah's 3 sons as well as Noah's age when each son was born.  Because we also know that Noah was age 600 (Gen 7:6) when the earth flooded, we can calculate that Shem was really age 110 when he begat Arphaxad.

2257* Arphaxad age 35 begat Salah   (Gen 11:12)

2227* Salah age 30 begat Eber  (Gen 11:14)

2193* Eber age 34 begat Peleg  (Gen 11:1)

2193 Tower of Babel; The earth was divided whereby the Adamic language was confounded and other tongues were employed.   The patriarch Eber hereby named his newborn son Peleg which means division. The tower fails and the  nations are established.  (Gen 10:25,32)

2193  Jeredites prepare for their journey to the promised land  (Ether 2)

2163* Peleg age 30 begat Reu  (Gen 11:18)

2131*  Reu age 32 begat Serug  (Gen 11:20)

2101* Serug age 30 begat Nahor  (Gen 11:22)

2072* Nahor age 29 begat Terah  (Gen 11:24)

2002* Terah age 70 begat Abram  (Gen 11:26)

1992  Terah begat Sarai  (Gen 17:17; 20:12)

1954 Peleg died at age 239  (Gen 11:19)

1953 Nahor died at age 148  (Gen 11:25)

1950 Abram age 52 leaves Ur and settles in Haran (Abr 1:1; 2:3-5).  He had the Urim and Thummim (Abr 3:1) and was ordained by Melchizedek (D&C 84:14

1944  Noah died at age 950  (Gen 9:29)

1940  Abram age 62 begins his journey to the land of Canaan  (Abr 2:14,15) after living in Haran for 10 years (Gen 16:3).  The Genesis account in 12:4 of age 75 is incorrect.

1930?  Abram, Sarah, and Lot, leave Canaan because of famine and visit Egypt (Gen 12:10-20; 13:1; Abr 2:21-25)

1924  Reu died at age 239  (Gen 11:21)

1916 Abram age 86 and Hagar beget Ishmael  (Gen16:16)

1903 Abram age 99 and Ishmael age 13 are circumcised  (Gen 17:1,24,25)

1902* Abram age 100 and Sarah beget Isaac  (Gen 21:5)

1901 Serug died at age 230  (Gen 11:23)

1865 Sara died at age 127 and Isaac is 37  (Gen 23:1)

1862 Isaac age 40 marries Rebeka   (Gen 25:20)

1854 Arphaxad died at age 438  (Gen 11:13)

1842* Isaac age 60 begat Esau and Jacob   (Gen 25:26)

1827 Abraham died at age 175  (Gen 25:7)

1827 Abraham buried by Isaac age 75 and Ishmael age 89  (Gen 25:9)

1824 Salah died at age 433  (Gen 11:15)

1802 Esau age 40 married Judith and Bashemath  (Gen 26:34)

1792 Shem died at age 610  (Gen 11:11)

1779 Ishmael died at age 137  (Gen 25:17)

1763 Eber died at age 464  (Gen 11:17)

1751 Jacob at age 91 begat Joseph   (Gen 30:24,25) This birth date corresponds to the fact that Jacob was 130 and Joseph was 39 when Jacob stood before Pharaoh and blessed him in 1712 BC  Although the account seems to suggest that Joseph was born after Jacob's 14 years of service to Laban for his two daughters (Gen 30:25) by which he continued another 6 years labor for his cattle (31:38,41) for a total of 20 years of hired service before returning to Canaan.  This simply is not possible because 7 years would not be enough time to bear 11 sons (by 4 wives) as chronicled in chapters 29 and 30.  Therefore, Jacob's statement in 30:25 is calling attention to Laban that he fulfilled his original 14 year commitment to Jacob, although he must have remained several more years of his own accord by which other sons including Joseph the 11th was born.  Jacob's declaration of  20 years of hired service was a reminder to Laban that he fulfilled his term of agreed service.

1734 Joseph age 17 is sold into Egypt (Gen 37:2,28,36)

1722 Isaac died at age 180 (Gen 35:28). Jacob & Esau at age 120 bury their father in Hebron 10 years before Jacob moved to Egypt. (Gen 35:27,29)

1721 Joseph age 30 is appointed by Pharaoh as 2nd in command (Gen 41:46)

1714 Joseph age 37 when famine begins (Gen: 41:54). Ephraim & Manesseh are born before the commencement of the 7 year famine (Gen 41:50).

1712* Joseph age 39 when he reveals himself to his brethren and Jacob age 130 stands before pharaoh and blesses the king (Gen 45:6,11; 47:9)

THE THIRD PERIOD

ISRAEL IN EGYPT FOR 215 YEARS

1712* Jacob age 130 stands before pharaoh and blesses the king (Gen 45:6,11; 47:9)

1695 Jacob died in Egypt at age 147 (Gen 47:28)

1641 Joseph died at age 110 (Gen 50:22,26)

1580 Amram begat Aaran (Ex 6:20)

1577 Amram begat Moses (Ex 6:20)

1537 Moses is exiled from Egypt

1497*  The Exodus after Israel's sojourn in Egypt for 215 years. The figure found in Exodus 12:40,41 of "430 years" for Israel's sojourn in Egypt is a gross error made by priests at the council of Jamnia (near Joppa) who compiled the Masorete (Hebrew) text in AD 90. Their translation which has survived in our present KJV Bible must be rejected as corrupted text. The Septuagint and Samaritan translations as well as Josephus account that the 430 figure is the time span between Abraham first entering Canaan and Moses leaving Egypt. New Testament teachings (Gal 3:16,17; Acts 7:6) support the reality that the Exodus occurred 430 years after God covenanted with Abraham in the strange land of Canaan.  The 430 year period may be broken down into two periods:

215 years  (Abraham enters Canaan to Jacob enters Egypt)

+  215 years  (Jacob enters Egypt to Moses leaves Egypt)

=  430 years total

Further examination of the traditional belief that Israel was in bondage for a full 430 years will prove that this is indeed an error.  First, the prophet Joseph Smith by revelation revealed that the mortality of the earth prior to the second coming of the Lord would last some 6,000 years (D&C 77) plus the grand millennium for a total of 7,000 years before the earth is glorified. If we in the year 2000 AD choose to deny the Septuagint & Samaritan translations and opt  for the Masorete, we therefore nullify the revelation of Joseph Smith because 6,170 years would have already expired. We know by further revelation that the Lord will "cut the work short" and that he will not exceed the time appointed but will actually reduce the years of the wicked generation (D&C 52:11).

Another reason to reject the supposed 430 year Hebrew sojourn in Egypt is because the numbers don't reasonably add up. How can the four generations of Levi, Kohath, Amram, and Moses fit into a time span of 430 years?   We learn in Ex 6:16-20 that Levi lived 137 years, Kohath lived 133 years, Amram lived 137 years, and Moses was 80 years old at the time of the Exodus.  I have no problem believing the long life span of Moses' fathers, but the four generations just can't cover 430 years.

Let us assume for the sake of argument that a 430 year period of Hebrew bondage was true. The following scenario is about the only mathematical way to make it work, but the outcome is absolutely ludicrous!  Joseph was 39 when his older brother Levi (3rd son of Jacob) came into Egypt.  Let us assume that Levi was 57 when he and his family settled  in Egypt to begin the 430 year countdown:

1         Levi at age 57 settles in Egypt

80      Levi at age 137 begat Kohath and died that same year

213    Kohath at age 133 begat Amram and died that same year

350    Amram at age 137 begat Moses and died that same year

430    Moses at age 80 leads Israel out of Egypt

Abracadabra!  We now have 430 years in Egypt. But this is false!

THE FOURTH PERIOD

THE EXODUS TO SOLOMON'S TEMPLE

480 YEARS

1449 Joshua age 85 speaks of his own strength to drive on and divide the land of Canaan (Josh 14:10)

1424 Joshua died at age 110 (Josh 24:29; Judges 2:7)

THE SIXTH PERIOD

BABYLON TO JESUS CHRIST

587 YEARS

587*  Zedekiah was carried off to babylon (2 Kings 25:2,7)

0  Jesus Christ is born (Matt 1:16). "Despite difficulty in squaring the report of  Luke 2:1, with other records of Roman history, interpreters tend to agree that Jesus was born from four to seven years B.C.. The source of this anomaly is the reform of the calendar by Dionysius Exiguus, who set the date of the incarnation of the Lord as the year 753 after the founding of Rome.  But Herod, into whose reign the Gospels place the birth of Jesus, died about 749 according to Roman reckoning, or 4 B.C.; and the census mentioned in the Christian story of Luke seems to have happened in the year 747 by the Roman count, or 6 B.C.  Somewhere between 4 and 7 B.C. is as close as modern research has been able to come in attempting to fix the date of Jesus' birth, and 4 B.C. is the year most commonly given."  (Encyclopedia Britanannica 1966)

In spite of the above anomaly regarding the A.D. calendar, we know that from Adam to Christ there were a total of 3,950 years that expired. This is how the B.C. dating is established in this chronology. In order to maintain the existing integrity of the A.D. calendar it will be necessary to account for the missing years between Christ's traditional birthday and his actual birthday. Therefore, I will simply add 5 additional years to fill this missing gap when referring to total years expired in the A.D. time line.  This period of years will be inserted within the Seventh Period

THE SEVENTH PERIOD

JESUS CHRIST TO THE ADAMIC YEAR 6000

2050 YEARS

0*  Jesus Christ is born 5 B.C. (Matt 1:16)

1830  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized

2000  5,955 years expired since Adam

2045*  6,000 years expired since Adam

There is one very important matter that must be considered when looking to the year 2045 A.D. for the completion of 6,000 years. The Lord has promised his Latter-day Saints that he would "cut his work short in righteousness".  (JS-M 1:20; D&C 52:11; 84:97; 109:59) This leads me to believe that the judgments spoken of in the Book of Revelation and the second coming of Jesus Christ will occur before the year 2045 A.D.   I feel that God in his mercy for his saints will end the 6th millennium early and apply that time to the great millennium until the 7,000 years are completed
